End-to-end encryption
End-to-end encryption is the most secure way to communicate privately and securely online. By encrypting data directly on your device, it prevents anyone from intercepting and accessing this data. Nobody will be able to see it, be it hackers, governments, or employers. The data will look like random characters that can only be decrypted by you, the owner of your data.
Avast holds a decryption key as well, but it’s stored on a Hardware Security Module that prevents us from accessing your data either. And even if you reset your login or password you can access your data as it’s connected to your account.

What we do and don’t do with your data
Since your data is encrypted, Avast cannot view, modify, or update any of your data. All we do is make sure your browser settings are synchronized to your other devices. To accomplish this, we use metadata (timestamps and referrers) that’s attached to the encrypted data to compute which device the data has been sent from.

Passphrase
If you want even more, Passphrase is also available and offers full end-to-end encryption. Just enter a password (or passphrase) that is used to encrypt the data directly on your device. This prevents absolutely anyone from intercepting and reading your data: not hackers, governments, employers, or even Avast itself.
Please note your passphrase is saved locally on your computer. Avast cannot reset it, so if you forget or lose your passphrase, the data in Avast’s servers is lost and you’ll have to restart the syncing process from scratch.
